If you have regular milk you can make buttermilk, all you need to do is add a tablespoon of vinegar of lemon juice

I have been making this cake for thirty years. It is my children’s favorite birthday cake. I increased the ingredients by half and bake it in an 8 inch by 12 inch pan that is about 2.5 inches deep for 50 to 60 minutes. It is thicker but we love it this way.

Texas Chocolate Cookie Sheet Cake has cinnamon in the cake. It gives it a deeper flavor, maybe the latino influence. Makes a lot of servings and never a crumb left.

No to the Nestle Quick (it’s a chocolate milk powdered drink mix, but yes to the Unsweetened cocoa – I always use Hershey’s.

I, too, have made this for years. We call it Texas sheet cake and butter is a MUST. Do NOT substitute margarine. It makes a big difference in flavor. Call it whatever….it’s awesome.

      April 8, 2017 at 10:23 pm

No a sheet cake pan is 15×10 pan. It won’t turn out in a 9×13 pan.

Yes it will fit a 13 x 9 inch pan. I’ve making this same exact cake for over 60 years( I am now 83), always use the 13x 9 inch glass dish.

They are talking about a jelly roll pan. It us shallow and larger than a 9×13. It can be done in a 9×13 but that makes the cake part thicker
