Prep Time 10 mins
Cook Time 1 hr 30 mins
Total Time 1 hr 40 mins
Servings 12 servings

Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 cup Self-rising Flour
  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 dash salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon lemon zest

Instructions

  • It's very important that all the ingredients be at room temperature.
  • Cream butter and sugar together.
  • Mix flours and salt in another bowl and then add 1/6th of the flour and an egg consecutively to the sugar mixture.
  • I leave the mixer on low and alternate with the last 1/6th of the flour going in after the last egg.
  • Add the milk slowly while mixing, add the flavorings and the zest if you're adding the lemon zest.
  • Pour evenly into a tube pan that's been greased. I use coconut oil, and glob it on, then I shake in powdered sugar.
  • You can use flour, but the sugar leaves a sweet taste on the outside of the cake instead of flour taste, and it works very well.
  • Put in cold oven on center rack, set oven to 325 for 90 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

I make a similar cake and after you cream the butter and sugar, I add one egg at a time and mixing for about a minute each time you add an egg, I then begin with adding some flour and mix well them add some milk. Begin and end with flour. Add vanilla at the end and mix well. Hope this helps! ~Debbie~

Is there any substitute for self rising flour?

Self-rising flour is all-purpose flour with baking powder and salt added. To make your own, combine 1 cup of all-purpose flour with 1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon of salt.

Confused your recipe says mix flours then next set is mix 1/6 flour with egg and repeat why not just mix flour then add was etc will it make difference if not done according to the recipe

You add 1/6 of the flour mixture and then 1 egg to the sugar/butter mixture. You then keep alternating flour, then egg. Yes it has to be done this way.
